Simple Present

Begin the sentence with a time phrase.

Include a frequency adverb.

Please include explicit subjects when you give information or ask for information in English.

Use frequency adverbs when you use the simple present to talk about routine or habitual activities. Frequency are placed as follows:

I almost always wake up before dawn. (before the verb)

We are normally in a good mood. (after is, am or are)

We can generally start our class on time. (after modal verbs)


Modal verbs: can, could, must, may, might, will, would, should, shall

What do these nouns mean?

Verb categories

Let's say there are a million verbs in English. Now let's divide those verbs into three (3) groups: TO BE, MODALS, and ALL THE OTHER GUYS.


In the TO BE category, we have the verb "to be" and all of its forms.


In the MODAL category, we have the modal verbs: should, shall, may, might, must, will, would, can, and could


And in the ALL THE OTHER GUYS category, we have all the other verbs in English

How to form questions in the simple present in each of the three categories

We are focusing on the most important question types, yes/no questions and information questions.


TO BE Category

Model: Is/Am/Are + SUBJECT + NOUN/ADJECTIVES/LOCATION

Here is the translation. Notice that when the presente del indicativo is used in Spanish, we do not always use the simple present in English!
