To Say vs to Tell

Updated: Nov 1, 2022

Use the verb "to tell" when the person who the message is directed to, is included in the sentence.

Rocio told me that she was having breakfast with her sister-in-law.

I will tell everyone about my first experience living in Michoacan.

Please don't tell Valeria the truth.

Use the verb "to say" in any form when the person who the message is directed to, is NOT included in the sentence.

Did you say that you didn't like apples?

Under what circumstances will Max say "no"_

They say the same thing all the time
