Go, Going, Gone, Goes...OMG!

Have you ever had one of those days when all you can remember is go, going, gone? And cannot remember how to use them, what verb tenses they are or how "goes" fits into the picture? Well it happens. Sometimes all of your basic English seems to have been destroyed. It often happens if you have a lot of physiological or sociological stress or both.


Go back to basics, but not to one of those tables that you memorized.


simple past

affirmative WENT

We went to the doctor's office last week.


negative DIDN'T GO

Ricardo didn't go to physical therapy yesterday.


simple present

affirmative GO, GOES

Mateo and Alexia go to the same school.

Alexia normally goes to school Monday through Friday.


negative DON'T GO, DOESN'T GO

They don't go to school on holidays.

Alexia doesn't usually go to bed later than I do.


simple future

affirmative WILL GO

I will go to Moroleon again before Christmas.

I am going to go to Moroleon again before Christmas.


negative WON'T GO

You won't go to Chiapas until next year.

You are not going to go to Chiapas until next year.


present continuous

affirmative IS GOING, AM GOING, ARE GOING

Somebody is going somewhere right now.


negative IS NOT GOING, AM NOT GOING, AREN'T GOING

I am not going anywhere right now.


present perfect

affirmative HAVE GONE, HAS GONE

Dona Paulita has gone to her tiendita. She is there now.


negative HAVEN'T GONE, HASN'T GONE

I haven't gone to the kitchen yet this morning.


FYI (for your information)

Each of these words has multiple labels and multiple functions.


go

is the simple form of the verb not a verb tense

is the naked infinitive not a verb tense

is the affirmative simple present for all subject but the the third person singular


going

is the present participle and part of the construction of all continuous verb tenses

is a gerund, used as a noun

is an adjective


gone

is the past participle and is part of the construction of all perfect verb tenses

is the past participle used in the construction of passive sentences in any verb tense


And goes is the affirmative simple present when the subject is the third person singular *he, she, or it).
