FANBOYS

Updated: Nov 1, 2022

FANBOYS is an acronym for "for and nor but or yet so". FANBOYS helps us remember the coordinating conjunctions that are used to glue together two independent clauses to form a single sentence. An independent clause is a collection of words, in a certain order, that can stand alone as a sentence, a complete thought.

To create a longer sentence by combining two sentences we can use:

, for

This means "because". For example:

I produce food because I must eat.

= I produce food, for I must eat.

, and

This means "plus" or "also". For example:

We have plenty of food, and we have a lot of water.

, nor

, but

, or

, yet

, so

This means "therefore". For example:

The ground is muddy outside, so I should wear my high rubber boots.

The ground is muddy outside, therefore I should wear my high rubber boots.
