Please read this text. Some of the vocabulary you understand. Nice. Some vocabulary you do not know. Some vocabulary you think you know, but you want to confirm if your guess is correct.

A new culture of work has been quietly spreading around offices, factories and workplaces worldwide. Workers are increasingly embracing the concept of "quiet quitting". This emerging phenomenon entails workers slowly abandoning doing things that are not part of their contract. The website entrepreneur.com defines quiet quitting as follows: "Quiet quitting is the process of coming to work to achieve the minimum requirements of your role in the time that you're there, then leaving. No offers of overtime, no stepping outside your designated obligations, no going the extra mile. It's the silent withdrawal of extra labor to mitigate what are perceived as unreasonable pressures."

Quiet quitting has increased in popularity since the coronavirus pandemic. People are reassessing their attitudes towards work. They have decided to achieve a more fulfilling work-life balance, and focus on avoiding job burnout. Workers are jettisoning unpaid duties they once voluntarily carried out in their workplaces. They do the bare minimum and leave at five on the dot. Some employers are responding with what is being termed as "quiet firing". This is when bosses try to get employees to leave. They do this by not raising salaries, disregarding employees' ideas and omitting them from meetings. A LinkedIn poll found that 48 per cent of employees in a survey have seen quiet firing in the workplace.

You understand, in theory, that ED adjectives are used when talking about the feelings of the subject. Perfect.

If the subject is something that cannot have feelings, then you know you must use the ING adjective.

But what if the subject is a person that (1) can have feelings and can also (2) cause other people to feel?

(1) The person giving the lecture was bored. This means that the person who was talking to the audience felt extremely uninterested in what he was doing.

(2) The person giving the lecture was boring. This sentence, on the other hand, does not say anything about how the subject felt. This sentence indicates that the speaker had the power to make the audience feel a certain emotion.

Friday was a very tiring day for Sarah. When she got home after work she was very tired. She didn't want to do anything but sleep! The next day was Saturday. She woke up early. She felt excited because she and her boyfriend planned an exciting trip to Mexico City to see Checo Perez a well-known Formula One race car driver.

After she got up, she brushed her teeth, took a shower, got dressed, put on a little make-up and started her housekeeping. She was surprised when her boyfriend came over early. He sometimes did surprising things when she least expected them. She was expecting him at 11AM, but he came at 9:30AM.

He came with groceries and went straight to the kitchen! He made breakfast and they ate together. After breakfast, she and her boyfriend washed the dishes and put them away. He helped her finish her house chores. They left at 11AM headed to Mexico City.

Her boyfriend liked to do things to make her smile, to make her feel special.

On the way to DF, they saw some interesting looking birds. Sarah's parents were both enthusiastic bird watchers. Sarah wasn't as interested in birds as her parents were, but these birds really caught Sarah's attention.
